Introduction To The Project

She had tuned into Raypower that Monday morning hoping to enjoy a smooth and short drive to work, accompanied by a series of sweet blending music from the never-disappointing Raypower FM. It sure didn’t disappoint. The music flow blended well, while she nodded in rhythm to the various beats, just ten minutes into the smooth drive.

“I hope it continues this way” She muttered to herself as she turned the steering wheel to swerve left.
She could have sworn her statement was cursed as it had probably brought about the bad traffic she met with on the new route.
“No no no. Not again!” She lamented, turning down the volume of the radio. The music subsided.
She stared straight into the traffic ahead of her for a few seconds and viola, she had an idea! She would turn immediately and try another route. Yes, that was it! That was the only way she could be on time for the meeting with the new partners and investors scheduled for 9 am.

“Jokes on you, Yemisi,” She said to herself on seeing the sea of vehicles that had gathered behind her just few minutes of her swerving into that route.

“Don’t these people sleep? This is just 6:40 am, for goodness sake. What the heck! ”She vented with a grimace.
Now she felt stuck. Google Maps had disappointed her. Another route was most likely in the same situation. That was Lagos!
She rested her head on the backrest and shut her eyes gently, while the music from the radio played quietly underground. In no time, her mind drifted away from her current physical environment far into the world of fantasy.

“Is anyone commuting along Ikeja this morning? How’s the traffic situation?” James050 texted in the chatroom.

“@James050, the traffic no be here o. I turned back sharp sharp. You should try the Ojota Opebi Bridge. It’s smooth here and I’m almost at my place of work” @Fola71 responded to him.

“Omo! You guys are the best. I almost got stuck at Gbagada, but now I’m at work, earlier than expected. Thanks @Uche222 for the route recommendation” Yemisi contributed to the discussion with a tone of gratefulness. Three notifications popped up on her screen. One informed her of the terrible gridlock at Oshodi and Apapa, the second suggested alternative routes, while the third suggested more chat rooms to join for different locations in case she would be relocating or changing her place of work.

“This is awesome man!” She said excitedly, almost smashing her phone happily, as she parked her car quietly in front of the huge building of her workplace.

“Move! Move!” An agbero’s husky voice and a loud bang on her windscreen brought her back to reality. She was still stuck in the traffic and would have to face the reality of staying hours in the Lagos traffic.

“Oh no!” She lamented, wishing her fantasy had been real. Real to save her the stress of being oblivious to traffic situations everywhere.

“This app must come to life,” She said sternly and firmly.
She got the message that the manager had canceled the meeting.
“Whoa, that’s awesome! Now, let’s do this!” She said, grabbing the steering, with a smile.
“The life-saving app is coming. The Messiah is coming” She guffawed.

Problem Statement

Many commuters find it difficult to use Google Maps to get up-to-date traffic information and communicate with other commuters in their particular region. The lack of an integrated chat function in Google Maps makes it difficult to find and communicate localized traffic reports, which results in poor route planning, longer travel times, and a lack of commuter community connection. This functional gap restricts the possibility of cooperative navigation and hinders the effective sharing of traffic-related information, making it more difficult for commuters to make wise decisions and successfully travel through crowded areas. Therefore, a chat application that smoothly connects with Google Maps is required, enabling commuters to talk, ask about traffic conditions, and share real-time updates within their particular locales, enabling more efficient travel.

Proposed Solution

To address the challenges faced by commuters in obtaining real-time traffic information and facilitating communication within their specific location while using Google Maps, I propose the development of a chat application that seamlessly integrates with the Google Maps platform. This solution aims to enhance the navigation experience and foster a collaborative community among commuters.

Goal Statement

My goal is to create a chat application integrated with Google Maps that empowers commuters like Yemisi Ayodele to navigate through traffic more efficiently by providing a platform for real-time communication, sharing of traffic updates, and collaborative decision-making. I want to create a sense of community among commuters, so they may share information, discover alternative routes, and make more informed decisions to reduce travel time and minimize the effect of traffic congestion. Through personalized notifications, seamless integration with Google Maps, and a safe and inclusive environment, my goal is to enhance the daily commute experience for users like Yemisi, ultimately improving their overall quality of life.

User Persona

For the user persona, I gathered insights from user research and interviews to understand the behaviors, preferences, and needs of my target audience. I identified key demographic information, such as age, occupation, and location, as well as psychographic details, such as motivations, goals, pain points, and preferred communication channels. Using this information, I developed detailed personas that represent different segments of my user base, helping to guide design decisions and ensure that the chat feature meets the diverse needs of the users.
